SURDYKA William, OFM Conv.

Brother Bill Surdyka, OFM Conv. was born in Chicopee, MA, on September 15, 1941 and passed on August 10, 2017 at the Fr. Justin Senior Friars Residence in Hamburg, NY, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Andrew and the late Emily (nee Ziemba). In addition to his Franciscan family, his friends and family survive him. After attending St. Francis High School, Athol Springs, NY, Brother Bill entered the Franciscan Friars Conventual Novitiate at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary in Ellicott City, MD in 1959, on August 15, 1960, he professed his Simple Vows and on August 15, 1964, he professed his Solemn Vows. He received a B.A. from Canisius College, Buffalo, NY in 1967 and he did graduate work at Loyola College. Brother Bill's entire religious life was dedicated to the secondary school apostolate that formed a backbone for many vocations to our Order in the second half of the 20th century. He began his teaching career at Baker-Victory, Lackawanna, NY in 1965. With the close of Father Baker H.S, Brother Bill (known to all his students as Bio Bill) he was transferred to Archbishop Curley HS, Baltimore MD. Assigned to his alma mater in 1970, St. Francis High School where he was involved in both teaching, serving as Assistant Principal for some time, and doing heavy internal service to the campus buildings and grounds until 1994. He was assigned to his home parish of St. Stanislaus, Chicopee for 10 years. In 2004, he returned to assist at St. Francis High School for some years. In 2011 he moved to the Fr. Justin Senior Friars Residence in Athol Springs, NY Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, from 4 -7:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4263 St. Francis Drive, Hamburg, NY 14075 concluding with a 7:00 p.m. Franciscan Wake Service. On Thursday, August 17, 2017, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a 9:00 a.m. visitation. Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery Friars Plot Cheektowaga, NY.
